The look of today’s plastic optical fiber is from a long journey that has seen many successes and failures too. This is a time that we got the original idea when the semaphore telegraph was invented .Plastic Optical fiber has a very elaborate history that dates time back in memorial in the 16th century. From then man has been researching to fine tune that idea. Graham Bell later came up with the first telephone which never got to function properly. After that, the first television set was invented by Logie Baird and Hansel Clarence. Transparent pipes were used to transmit images. Written history of the plastic optical fiber started being documented with different theories being contested by different researchers. Some of the initial documentation was from Harold Hopkins. He documented on imaging fibers that were uncovered. On the other hand Van Heel talked of bundles of covered fiber. Initially all the fibers were not clad thus internal reflection. After that, heads were put together and it was discovered that after cladding there was minim ore interference between the fibers.
Before the invention of the plastic optical fiber, the glass optical fiber had been invented but still it never met the standard set because it only managed medical imaging at a certain level. It could not handle any other communication because of some short comings it had. Donald K, Peter Schultz and Robert M invented the fiber optic wire .Since then the modifications to enhance better plastic optical fiber have been on and we experience major improvements day by day. Most of the technology we use especially in communication and data transmitting is through the plastic optical fiber.
The above names are of some people worth mentioning because they have contributed a lot in the evolution of the fiber optic.
