[WP1] [WP2] [WP3] [WP4] [WP5] [WP6] [WP7]Objectives
WP5 is a demonstration work-package, which will be active
during from month 16 onwards. The POF-ALL technical research
results obtained in WP1-WP4 will be demonstrated over real
application systems on two different test-beds: the Fastweb
network test-bed at ISMB and at Fastweb internal sites, and the
POF-House test-bed at POFAC. This will require interfacing the
POF transmission prototypes realized in WP1-WP2 with commonly
used network transmission protocols, i.e., mainly with Ethernet.
Moreover, this WP will show pre-commercial implementation of
some of the best solutions coming out from WP1-WP2 and, if
feasible, an introduction of POF system in a part of the FastWeb
network.
In order to prepare the construction of the testbeds, required
components will be built and tested during the second year of
the project.
Description of work
One aim of test-beds is to have a test option under different
environmental conditions and with different real-word network
applications, with a specific emphasis on Ethernet
compatibility. In fact, the availability of Ethernet-compatible
prototype will allow testing the prototypes themselves over
which different real-word applications (such as video
streaming). The second aim is to demonstrate under real
conditions the functionality of broadband solutions.
Fibers and components will be developed, characterized and
tested in the other work-packages. Every test-bed should be a
common test environment for different combinations of components
with comparable and realistic parameters. Key elements of the
test environment are the measurement setups available at POFAC:
• Bit error tester for bit rates up to 2.7 Gbit/s (plus 4
channels with 660 Mbit/s available for cross-talk measurements
in parallel and bidirectional connections)
• climatic chamber for tests under low/high temperatures and
humidity
• broadband optical receivers and high speed oscilloscope for
eye diagram analysis
• near and far field analyzer for the measurement of mode
distribution
In addition to measurements of bit error probability and eye
diagram, systems will be tested with several protocols (mainly
Ethernet and IEEE1394) and applications (mainly video streams,
which are by far the most demanding applications). Depending on
the application, parallel channels or bidirectional transmission
is required. Delay times and jitter are specific parameters to
be measured for these cases.
Test-beds will enable the measurement of the realised components
with new fibers, which will be developed during the run time of
the project.
To demonstrate the applicability of the developed systems in
real environments, practical applications shall be used. Such a
possibility exists in the “Nuremberg POF-Demo Apartment” and in
the planned “POF Demo House”.
Another important contribution to test and demonstrate will be
given by Fastweb, that will try to check and demonstrate the
compatibility of the systems developed in POF-ALL inside its
access network. This work will comprise several activities to be
carried out in a real Fastweb environment:
• Installation of POF switches and media-converters.
• Check of all connections and compatibility with Fastweb
transmission parameters
• Planning of preliminary compatibility test in-field
• Selection of some customers for real installation test towards
final user
• Implementation of preliminary compatibility test on Fastweb
webfarm and by selected customers.
• Feedback from the system integrator on the ease and
practicality of the connectorization and mechanical splicing of
active and passive POF components.
• Analysis of test report to start the validation procedures in
our test lab of active and passive POF components.
In parallel, a validation activity will be carried out,
following the standard validation procedures that Fastweb
applies to new system and subsystems prior to the introduction
in its network. In particular:
• Definition of validation parameters on POF systems at 10 and
100Mbit/s and on passive and active components integrated in our
access network.
• Installation of active and passive components on test
validation line.
• Implementation of validation test in regard to quality and
performance transmission of Fastweb supply services on the
compliance of our network validation and network management
specification.
• This validation tests are implemented on components in stand
alone and integrated on our access network
• Test reports Analysis of stand alone or integrated components.
• Validation and approval report of active and passive POF
components.
Fastweb-related demonstration activities will also be carried
out in ISMB, where a “copy” of a FTTH Fastweb residential
installation is present.
