General description, expertise and role in the project

STMicroelectronics organization involved in the project is the Photonic Unit, part of the IC Smart Power and MEMS Technologies, an organization inside FTM Front-End Technology and Manufacturing Group.

The Photonic Unit group has 8 researchers in design, 6 in technology, and 23 in assembly and packaging.

The main current R&D activities are in the area of optical transceiver for 10 Gb/s applications, optical bidirectional transceiver for PON networks, optical transmitter and receiver for Free Space Communication, and very low cost transceiver for POF links for Automotive and Consumer Markets.

 The total number of person-months dedicated to the POF-ALL project is 24.

Facilities

To support the research required by POF ALL project, the following items are available:

·         an optical simulation tool for properly design the coupling element between a standard large core POF and the active areas of transmitter or receiver developed inside the project;

·         assembly and packaging clean room area to fabricate the prototypes required for test bed demonstrations;

·         an optical characterization laboratory to test optical transmitters and receivers from d.c. up to 3 Gbit/s.

Relevant publications

The photonic unit team has published several papers in journals and conference proceedings. The team has filed more than 30 patents in different fields of optics, in particular in integrated optics and in low cost silicon packaging for optoelectronic devices. STM is also involved in several European projects as for example the GIANT project (see website: http://www.alcatel.be/Giant/index.jhtml ).

CV partner reference person

Maurizio Lenzi received the M.Sc. (Laurea) degrees in electronic engineer from the Politecnico of Turin, Italy, in 1991. He is Senior Engineer with ST Microelectronics since March 2002. Before joint STM he was with Corning Optical technologies Italia. His research interests include silica and silicon waveguide integrated circuits, hybrid integration of active devices on silicon sub mounts and low cost optical modules for automotive market. Mr. Lenzi is member of IEEE and LEOS
