General description, expertise and role in the project

Founded in September 1999, Fastweb Group is the leading alternative operator of fixed broadband telecommunications services in Italy’s main urban areas.

Fastweb, with own laboratory in Milan, has developed a new generation of telecommunications networks and services providing a complete alternative to traditional telephone networks in the main metropolitan areas of Italy (Milan, Rome, Turin, Genoa, Venice, Padua, Bologna, Naples, Bari and Alessandria) and in several smaller cities (including Biella, Modena and Reggio Emilia).

FASTWEB’s competitive advantage over other telecommunications companies, is based on its breakthrough technological solution: FASTWEB was the first company in the world to combine the extensive use of IP (Internet Protocol) for the integrated management of voice, data and video through packet-switching with its fibre optic and xDSL network. In this way the Company reached two objectives: firstly to offer its clients practically unlimited bandwidth and secondly to maximize the efficiency of its investments in infrastructure. With this network platform, FASTWEB was able to integrate previously separate functions and develop innovative, value-added services, that can be used simultaneously over a single connection.

FASTWEB provides a wide range of services - telephony, broadband Internet connectivity, advanced video-communication (video-conferencing for businesses and video-telephony for residential customers), virtual private networks (VPN), audio and video streaming, business-to-employee (B2E), tele-surveillance, digital and interactive TV and Video-on-Demand services - to all market segments ranging from large, small and medium sized businesses, small offices and home offices to residential customers. Access to the end-user is provided directly through fibre optics (with Fibre-to-the-Home/Fibre-to-the-Office solutions) or through xDSL technology over unbundled lines.

The total number of person-months dedicated to the POF-ALL project is 33.

Facilities

The extension of Fastweb fiberoptic networwk is about 15.000Km in all Italy, of which more than 7,000 km of local access. In the cities covered by our services we have totally about 40 POPs with all devices for transport our services over IP protocol. Our “Webfarm” in Milan all devices dedicated on the video service broadcasting are installed. In our Laboratory  in Milan all functionalities of the fiber network architecture like backbone, POP, minipop and access last mile are emulated.

For the ADSL services in the laboratory we have Emulated 6 DSLAM and 2 Central Office. In the laboratories the following measurements can be performed:

  • Performance of transport all service on IP protocol
  • characteristics parameters of fibre network
  • Compatibility of new fiber, passive and active new components of the network
